Day surgery



Our new Day Surgery Unit is designed to ensure the best care for our patients. 

If you are scheduled for surgery at Joseph Brant Hospital and will be returning home the same day, you are considered an outpatient. If you are staying the night, you are considered an inpatient.

Our Day Surgery unit is located on Level 2 of the South Tower.

Hours of Operation
6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Friday
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Statutory Holidays.

Patient Information & Education
Being informed is key to improving your experience during your stay at the hospital.

Depending on your healthcare needs, you may visit the Pre-Operative Planning Clinic for further assessments and testing before your procedure. 

If you are scheduled for a Day Surgery procedure, here is what to expect:

  • For outpatients, arrive two (2) hours before your scheduled surgery and check in at Admitting on Level 1 of the South Tower and then proceed to registration desk on Level 2 of the South Tower with your health card and all required forms or documents.
  • For inpatients, report to the Admitting Department 2 hours prior to the Operation Room (O.R.) time located on Level 1 of the South Tower (1S106)
  • You will wait in the lounge until a member of your healthcare team takes you into the Day Surgery Unit
  • You will be prepared for your surgery and be transported to the O.R.
  • Your surgeon will see you prior to the surgery
  • After your procedure, you may spend time in the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (P.A.C.U.) to recover


 After your stay in P.A.C.U., you will either be transported to:

  • Day Surgery until ready to be discharged.
    - Please arrange in advance to have family member or friend take you home and assist you. You must not drive yourself home.
    - All jewelry must be removed prior to admission.
    - Bring minimal personal belongings.
  • A Surgical Inpatient room depending on the surgical procedure or your health care needs.


Please be aware that surgeries may be delayed or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. We will make every effort to keep patients and families informed of delays and cared for in a timely manner.

Keep any valuables, including money, at home.

Our nurses and volunteers will let families know where to wait and inform them of expected wait times.
