Joseph Brant Hospital believes that every health care organization has a responsibility to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts to better serve patients, families and employees.

We are committed to listening, learning and understanding to ensure every person can work and receive care safely, openly and honestly.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Action Table

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Action Table was formed in 2020. The purpose of the Action Table is to develop an annual Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan with prioritized activities aligned to the Diversity and Inclusion Framework.

The Action Table draws on the personal experiences and engagement of our employees, physicians, volunteers, leadership, patients and community.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Action Plan

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Action Table is tasked with developing an organizational action plan to sustain and advance our efforts. When developed, the action plan will be reviewed annually.  

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Framework

The Diversity., Equity and Inclusion framework incorporates Joseph Brant Hospital’s strategic objectives and uses an anti-oppression approach to supporting a workplace that actively seeks to rectify systemic inequities and upholds our Values, Mission, and Vision.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion & Indigenous Inclusion

Our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) includes Indigenous inclusion—recognizing and celebrating the diversity and contributions of Indigenous peoples in Canada. 

Land Acknowledgement

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Action Table starts every meeting with a land acknowledgement. The acknowledgement presents an opportunity to:

  • show our respect for the land,
  • reflect historically,
  • show accountability to Indigenous people; and,
  • thank those who still live on and care for the land.

Land acknowledgement are not meant to:

  • threaten or alienate non-Indigenous or Indigenous people,
  • speak for or represent Indigenous communities,
  • appropriate Indigenous ideas and knowledge, or
  • be the only action we take towards truth and reconciliation.
Short-form land acknowledgement

Joseph Brant Hospital recognizes that our hospitals and community-based services are provided on the Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and recognize this land as being home and traditional territory to other Indigenous people since time immemorial.

We must commit to not repeat past mistakes and to work towards more equitable and respectful relationships with the First Nations, Inuit (i·nyoo·uht), and Métis (mey-tee). Acknowledging the territories and the original stewards of these lands is a fundamental responsibility of our organization and part of our commitment to work towards Truth and Reconciliation.

Joseph Brant Hospital wishes to respect and honour the original peoples of this land and the histories and lived experiences of these communities.   

Long-form land acknowledgement

We acknowledge that Joseph Brant Hospital’s gathering takes place on the Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation as well as the traditional territory of the Huron-wendat (huron-wen·dat) and Haudenosaunee (hoh-dee-noh-shoh-nee)peoples.

These lands are now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit (i·nyoo·uht), and Métis (mey-tee) peoples. Long before today, Indigenous peoples have been the stewards of these lands. Indigenous peoples in Ontario continue to care for this land and shape the province we live in.

We recognize that these lands, both historically and currently, have been the home and gathering place of many Indigenous people from various Nations from across Turtle Island. We are grateful for the opportunity to also live, work, and meet in this territory.

The Diversity and Inclusion Action Table is committed to keeping you informed. As part of our Action Plan, we will include an annual update within the hospital’s Annual Report.
