Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (EMCPA)

On March 21, 2020 the provincial government announced a temporary order under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (EMCPA). The order granted hospitals the ability to modify vacation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

What this means for you

Under the order, we are permitted to cancel or defer vacations. As well, as recall essential healthcare workers from vacation it warranted.

Vacation requests for April 1 to May 31, 2021

As an essential service and in anticipation of our need for healthcare workers we are pausing on the approval on any NEW vacations from now until May 31, 2021.

Cancelling approved vacation

Approved vacation requests will be honored, whenever possible. There is an emergency provision in place to allow for the recall of employees who are on vacation and/or may include the cancellation of previously approved vacations.

Vacation pay-out option

On a one-time basis, employees can choose to receive up to 50 per cent of their 2020/2021 carry over as a pay-out, to a maximum payout of 150 hours. lIf you are interested in this option, please submit a vacation pay-out request form to Payroll. The deadline to submit a request is April 23, 2021. This is a firm deadline to allow for payment in the May 6, 2021 pay deposit.

Staff can access their amount of vacation carryover on their pay deposit.

Summer vacation

Requests will be reviewed by Managers in alignment with the need to support operations. We encourage employees schedule some time over the summer 2021 to September 30, 2021. Given the unpredictable nature of our staffing needs over the next 4-6 weeks, it is understood that requests for the month of June 2021 will be tentatively approved only.

Please continue to follow the normal vacation request and approval process for your department

Vacation carry-over

Available vacation hours not used during the 2020-2021 vacation year will carry-over.

Using your carry-over

By April 1, 2021, employee's must provide their manager with a plan for how their carry over will be used. All 2020/2021 carry over balances must be depleted by December 31, 2021.

Carry-over request form

For this year only, there will not be a requirement to submit a Vacation Carry Over Request Form. Carry over will occur automatically.
