Recognizing Medical Staff Achievements at JBH

Posted on Thursday July 15, 2021

At Joseph Brant Hospital, we are incredibly proud of the caliber and skill of all our medical staff – this has been especially evident over the past 16 months, as the pandemic tested the entire healthcare community and saw many lives saved thanks to the dedication and care of our medical teams.

In the most trying of circumstances, it is important to take the time to recognize the achievements of our colleagues. At JBH, our Medical Staff Association (MSA) established the MSA Awards in 2019 as a way to enable the physicians at JBH to celebrate each other’s contributions.

The award nominations are open to all JBH medical and professional staff including physicians, dentists and midwives.

There are seven MSA awards this year, including a special Pandemic award to highlight a member of the medical staff who rose to the challenge and went above and beyond to support their colleagues and patients during COVID-19.

Pandemic Award

Dr. Prodger

Firstly, we would like to congratulate Dr. Dwight Prodger on receiving the Pandemic award. Dr. Prodger ensured all COVID-19 patients in our ICU  received the best possible care, from admission to discharge. He supported ICU staff and helped facilitate connections between patients andfamily members who were unable to visit their loved ones due to heightened safety protocols.

Quality Improvement Award

Dr. Jaswal

Next, we would like to acknowledge Dr. Gurpreet Jaswal. Dr. Jaswal has been awarded the Quality Improvement award for 2021. This annual award recognizes a physician who goes beyond the requirements of their position to creatively promote or enhance patient safety and quality of care and demonstrates initiative, problem solving and creativity while promoting a positive work environment.

Outstanding Consultant Award

Dr. Khanna

We would also like to recognize an outstanding physician who provides consultation services to the Emergency Department or within the Hospital Programs at Joseph Brant Hospital. This year’s Outstanding Consultant award recipient is Dr. Robin Khanna. Dr. Khanna consistently demonstrates responsiveness, compassion, empathy and collegiality while providing the highest level of evidence based care to patients and service to his department.

Rising Star Award

Dr. Austin

Dr. Janice Austin is the recipient of the Rising Star award, which recognizes an outstanding physician in his or her first five years at Joseph Brant Hospital who exhibits a high level of initiative, dedication and quality care serving patients. Dr. Janice Austin consistently provides that exceptional service and exceeds the requirements of the position to creatively promote or enhance patient safety and quality of care.

Foundation Recognition Award

Dr. Selchen

The Foundation Recognition award recipient for 2021 is Dr. Steven Selchen. Dr. Selchen embodies the spirit of philanthropy and continues to work with the Foundation and the community to engender a spirit of giving that has enabled the Foundation to move forward in their efforts to support the excellent work that occurs at Joseph Brant Hospital for our community. Dr. Selchen also generously gave his time during the pandemic to host popular JTalks, virtual events on Facebook that featured different guest speakers who shared important information for the community related to COVID-19.

Excellence in Teaching Award

Dr. Viljoen

The annual Excellence in Teaching Award awarded to Dr. Jeanetta Viljoen. Dr. Viljoen exemplifies the roles of a Clinical Educator, Mentor, Facilitator, Scholar and Teacher and she has made significant contributions in helping other medial learners at JBH with their career development. She also promotes health and well-being among medical learners and, as the Inpatient Physician Lead for Joseph Brant Hospital’s Mental Health and Addictions Program, Dr. Viljoen works to help patients struggling with mental health in their recovery.

Dr. W. Love Sr. Distinction Award

Dr. Rawlinson

The final award, the Dr. W. Love Sr. Distinction award, was named in memory of Dr. Love Sr. who practiced medicine for 44 years and cared for many patients at Joseph Brant Hospital. This year’s recipient is Dr. John Rawlinson, selected because, like Dr. Love Sr., he is seen as a role model in patient-focused care; he champions the values and mission of JBH; provides mentoring and education; and he gives his time to humanitarian or community causes not necessarily limited to health care.

Congratulations to all of the 2021 MSA Award recipients and thank you to all our physicians at Joseph Brant Hospital for your hard work and dedication throughout this past year.
