Changes to JBH Mandatory Masking Requirement

Posted on Monday May 01, 2023

Effective May 1, Joseph Brant Hospital (JBH) will gradually begin to phase out the universal mandatory masking requirement that was put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic, and transition to a “mask-friendly” facility.

Everyone who comes to JBH is still required to put on a mask when entering the hospital. A mask must be worn in all areas where patients may be present, including waiting rooms, elevators and hallways.

Masks are recommended, but no longer required, in low-risk, non-patient care areas, such as administrative offices, parking garage stairwells, Tim Hortons and the cafeteria. Masks will continue to be provided at hospital entrances.

As a reminder, patients and visitors must self-screen upon entry to the hospital. Patients who are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms are required to wear a mask at all times. Visitors who are experiencing symptoms should not come to the hospital.

In making this decision, we considered current Public Health Ontario guidance – which indicates that the province is currently in a sustained low-risk period of COVID-19 transmission – the advice of regional and JBH experts, as well as the transition that is happening in other hospitals.

JBH will continue to monitor any changes in public health guidance and COVID-19 cases in our hospital and community. Masking requirements may change if needed to protect the health and safety of everyone who comes to and works in the hospital.
