Meet Dr. Douglas Belton, Joseph Brant Hospital’s new Chief of Diagnostic Imaging. We met with him to ask him a few questions about what inspired him to pursue medicine, his career path and what he works on outside of the hospital.

For as long as he can remember, Dr. Belton always wanted to become a physician.

“My mother, Dr. Ruby Belton is currently a radiologist in my hometown and my love for medicine and diagnostic imaging stemmed from seeing how satisfied she was with her career and taking care of patients.”

Having spent the last four years practising in Regina, where he participated in the education and mentorship of medical students and residents through the University of Saskatchewan. This spring he made the decision to pursue the role as Chief of Diagnostic Imaging at JBH.

“I came to Joseph Brant Hospital because of the forward thinking of our senior leadership and the overall positive culture that exists within the organization.”

In his role as Chief, he oversees the day-to-day operations of the hospital’s Diagnostic Imaging department and provides clinical diagnostic radiology services. He also oversees the Complete Breast Care program, a multidisciplinary program at JBH where the departments of diagnostic imaging, surgery and oncology come together to streamline services and tailor treatment plans for patients with breast cancer.

We asked him what makes this program unique.

“The entire spectrum of services are provided which includes the diagnostic workup by radiology, expedited referral to surgeons and any additional treatments by oncology. The program is unique in that it shows JBH’s commitment to interdepartmental collaboration and improving the overall patient care experience.”

Outside of the hospital, alongside his mother, he co-founded the non-profit organization Physicians & Laypersons Educational Associates of Greater Rochester New York (PLEA of GRNY) in his hometown of Rochester, NY.

“It’s an organization that brings together multidisciplinary breast cancer care physicians, medical caregivers and laypeople. We hold bi-annual seminars to support idea exchange and equal educational opportunities to all participants.”
