Message of Condolence: Dr. Anthony Ford-Jones

Posted on Saturday April 02, 2022

It is with great sadness that we share with you that Dr. Anthony Ford-Jones, a valued member of the Department of Pediatrics at Joseph Brant Hospital for more than 39 years, has passed away. It is a loss deeply felt by his colleagues across the hospital and in the community.

Dr. Ford-Jones joined the medical staff of Joseph Brant Hospital in 1981. He was one of the founding pediatricians of the Pediatrics program and played a critical role in its growth. He also served as an assistant clinical professor with McMaster University Children’s Hospital, providing guidance and mentorship to future physicians who trained at JBH. He had a longstanding community practice in Burlington and often still did home visits.

Dr. Ford-Jones embodied humility and grace in his life and career. He shared his joyful personality with every staff member and patient he encountered, treating everyone with the utmost kindness and respect. His career is distinguished by a remarkable combination of qualities and skills that made him truly one of a kind.

He was a fierce advocate for children in Burlington and across Canada as evidenced by initiatives on climate change and assisting incarcerated youth. He had a love for learning the latest technology and using it to enhance his patient care. Dr. Ford-Jones shared his immense experience and intellectual curiosity with his colleagues at weekly Thursday morning rounds and fostered a welcoming community in the Department of Pediatrics. He brought passion and vigilance to his care of children, researching to diagnose difficult conditions and advocating for families. In 2014, he received the Canadian Pediatric Society’s Distinguished Community Pediatrician Award, selected by his peers from among 1,100 eligible community pediatricians across the country.

Upon his retirement in 2021, Dr. Ford-Jones shared a touching message, thanking his colleagues – both clinical and non-clinical, in the hospital and the community – for their contributions and support over the years:

“It is with such gratitude that I look back over the 40 years that I've cared for the children of Burlington and surrounding areas, and for their parents. What a privilege it is to be let into the lives of so many young people and their families and to be able to help them have the best health.”

Dr. Ford-Jones leaves a legacy as a brilliant and talented physician, dedicated teacher and mentor, supportive colleague and true friend. He radiated positivity and shared this so generously with his colleagues at JBH and the Burlington community.

His love and kindness is mirrored in his wife and fellow pediatrician Dr. Lee Ford-Jones, their two daughters and their grandchildren of whom he was immensely proud. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and all those who knew him. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our friend and colleague and we will miss him beyond measure.
