During Sonography Week, we celebrate and recognize the important role sonographers play in delivering quality health care to patients. We met with Lori, a sonographer at Joseph Brant Hospital to learn more about her role, ultrasounds and why she finds her profession to be rewarding.

“Having been a sonographer for 36 years, I still find it to be a challenging yet rewarding profession.”

Sonographers specialize in the use of ultrasounds to produce images, scans, video or three-dimensional images of solid organs. It is a useful tool that can be used to make accurate diagnoses.

An ultrasound is non-invasive and painless and can be used in conjunction with other diagnostic methods such as Computed Sonography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Mammography and X-ray.

“Ultrasound is used to compliment other imaging methods and in some cases it’s used when there are inconclusive findings using other methods.”

As a sonographer at Joseph Brant Hospital (JBH), Lori uses her training and skills to use an ultrasound transducer or probe (a small hand held device that produces sound waves) to assess solid organs in the body and present her findings to the radiologist.

“I enjoy working in this profession because it’s rewarding to know that you play a role in helping patients get a diagnosis, but also with the advances in ultrasound technology, I am continually presented with new learning opportunities to upgrade my skillset. It helps to keep things interesting and new.”
