For Healthcare Security and Safety week we celebrate and recognize the work of our security staff and the critical role they play in keeping our hospital, personnel, patients, families and visitors safe. We spoke with Miguel about his role as a security guard and why he pursued a career in healthcare security.

“Being a security guard in the hospital is a rewarding experience. From helping lost patients and visitors find their way around, to helping staff with a high-risk individual, I can look back at the end of the day and feel accomplished.”

When Miguel graduated from university with a degree in psychology, he knew he wanted to pursue a career that was no only rewarding, but one where he could apply his knowledge of mental health crisis response to use.

As a security guard at Joseph Brant Hospital (JBH) he is part of a comprehensive service that maintains safety and security throughout the hospital. He works closely with clinical and non-clinical staff in high-risk settings to provide de-escalation and intervention techniques to ensure patient and staff safety.

In addition to working in high-risk settings, he responds to Emergency Codes, enforces policies, monitors the facility, and works closely with law enforcement and emergency services.

Additionally, he, along with the rest of the security team, work to provide a welcoming and supporting environment for staff, patients and visitors.

“I know it can be intimidating to see a member of the security team, but please feel free to say hello and stop one of us to ask questions or for directions. We are here to help!”
