What to Expect: Breastfeeding Clinic

Joseph Brant Hospital’s ‘What to Expect’ series aims to educate and inform its patients and the public on various services and programs provided at the hospital in an effort to help alleviate any anxiety or stress.

The Breastfeeding Clinic team provide support and guidance during a mother and baby's hospital stay and after discharge both in the clinic and over the telephone.

Joseph Brant Hospital’s (JBH) Breastfeeding clinic has a board-certified lactation consultant available to answer your questions from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., seven days a week.

We have answered a few commonly asked questions below about the Breastfeeding Clinic and what you can expect.

1)   Do I need to give birth at Joseph Brant Hospital in order to access the Breastfeeding clinic?

Mothers and babies up to six weeks of age, who were born at Joseph Brant Hospital, or who have a physician or midwife with privileges at JBH can access the Breastfeeding clinic.

We also see babies who were discharged from our Neonatal Intensive care unit.

2)   Are the appointments only over the phone? Or am I able to come in to the hospital?

Lactation consultants are available for in-person appointments, as well as virtual and telephone assistance.

Families are welcome to book an appointment to come to JBH Breastfeeding clinic for support and guidance in infant feeding.

3)   How do I schedule an appointment?

You may schedule an appointment by calling the Breastfeeding Clinic directly at 905-  681-4840.

4)   How long are the appointments?

Your appointment will range from 45 to 60 minutes.

5)   If my appointment is at the hospital, what should I bring?

We ask you to bring your baby hungry and ready to feed in the clinic.

A stroller is welcome for convenience through the hospital.

 Please also bring:

  • your diaper bag
  • breast pump and supplement (expressed breastmilk/formula), if using.

6)   If my appointment is over the phone, what should I have with me?

If your appointment is over the phone, please have your health history and your baby’s health history available, as we will ask you questions about both.

We will also ask about how often the baby is feeding, how frequently diapers are being changed, and about any feeding challenges you are having.

7)   What do I need to wear for an in person appointment?

Comfortable clothing. We ensure all women have privacy in the clinic.

8)   Is there a limit to how many follow up appointments I can have?

Our team will coordinate the best possible plan for each family in our care, specific to their individual needs. We may see some families once, or we may continue visits every few days or weekly. We are available for families up to 6 weeks of age.

9)  Is there anything else I need to know?

International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) have specialized skills in breastfeeding care and management. Our lactation consultants provide evidence-based education and assistance to all mothers and healthcare workers regarding infant nutrition.

IBCLCs are here to provide reassurance, information and support in meeting parents feeding goals. Clients may also request appointments during the prenatal period to discuss infant feeding.

JBH's breastfeeding clinic has been operating for the last 26 years, helping Burlington area families. Our lactation consultants love what they do and are proud to serve our community!
