Black History Month is an opportunity for our hospital, all organizations and all individuals across the country, to recognize and honour the past and present contributions of Black Canadians. Throughout the month we will be sharing stories from our staff and physicians as they reflect on what Black History Month means to them.

Black History Month for me is a time for remembrance that the opportunities that have happened in my life developing as a medical professional by no means came to me by accident. As a first generation immigrant from East Africa, coming upon close mentors I believe was intimately tied to building my confidence over the years, especially from those that look just like me.

Black History Month reminds me to be present visibly for my patients, advocate for them and deliver the best care I can, from someone that may look just like them.
