Joseph Brant Hospital’s May 24 Prevalence and Incidence Study Results

As outlined in our Pressure Ulcer Action Plan, Joseph Brant Hospital conducted a hospital-wide Prevalence and Incidence Study on Friday May 24, 2019. An Interdisciplinary team at Joseph Brant Hospital (JBH), including physicians and nurses, evaluated all admitted inpatients for pressure ulcers. Dr. Ian Preyra, Chief of Staff, confirmed that 21 inpatients had pressure ulcers, with 11 of those inpatients having hospital-acquired pressure ulcers. All patients identified during our evaluation had appropriate care plans in place. Our review did not reveal any previously undiagnosed pressure ulcers.

Below are Joseph Brant Hospital’s results of our May 24 Hospital-Wide Prevalence and Incidence Study:

While it is good to see results that are lower than the 2019 national average, we are committed to continuously improving our wound and skin care practices.

We are continuing to implement our Pressure Ulcer Action Plan. The work underway will allow us to fully address patient and family concerns, learn from identified opportunities, reduce the risk of further similar incidents and improve our daily practices.

We remain confident in the ongoing care our staff provides to the people that we serve, each and every day.

Sincerely,

Eric Vandewall                                                                                   Dr. Ian Preyra

Background: Joseph Brant Hospital’s four year comparison with the National Prevalence and Incidence Study Results

For the purpose of this report, ‘prevalence’ is defined as the number of patients with pressure ulcers compared to the total number of patients evaluated; ‘incidence’ is the number of new hospital-acquired pressure ulcers compared to the total number of patients evaluated.

JBH voluntarily undertakes annual Prevalence and Incidence Studies related to pressure ulcers with the last study completed in February 2019. These annual studies are conducted by Hill-Rom, using the International Pressure Ulcer Prevalence™ (IPUP) Survey.

Below are the 2016-2019 four year average Prevalence and Incidence Study Results:
