Pets are not allowed in our hospital except for Service Animals and Guide Dogs as defined below:
Service Animals are animals that are individually trained to perform tasks for people with disabilities such as; guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling wheelchairs, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, or performing other special tasks.
A Guide Dog is a dog trained as a guide for a blind person.
At Joseph Brant Hospital we are committed to making our services as accessible as possible for people with disabilities. In 2005 the Ontario government passed the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). Staff will work with patients who need their Service Animal or Guide Dog during a hospital stay, to develop an accessibility plan that will work for them.
In keeping with the AODA, Guide dogs and other Service Animals may accompany people with disabilities in all areas of the hospital except where excluded by law or where there is a significant risk to a staff person or member of the public (identified risk of severe allergic reaction).
According to Infection prevention as well as health and safety laws and guidelines, Guide dogs and Service Animals are not allowed in certain other environments within the hospital, such as:
- A sterile environment
- Operating room
- A room where radiation exposure occurs
- Areas under isolation due to infection prevention and control
