After 19 years of dedicated service at Joseph Brant Hospital, radiologist Dr. John Rawlinson has been honoured with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) Board of Directors Award, recognizing his exceptional commitment to patient care and medical innovation.
Dr. Rawlinson's path to medicine began with childhood house calls from his family physician. "I was enormously reassured by his presence and wanted to emanate that same presence to make a difference myself for those in need and suffering," he reflected.
Initially pursuing surgery and earning Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) qualifications in London and Edinburgh, a pivotal encounter with an Interventional Radiologist changed his trajectory. This specialist helped manage some of Dr. Rawlinson's surgical complications, and demonstrated to him how his surgical experience could provide unique insights in the field of radiology. "Without more persuasion, I switched careers," Dr. Rawlinson shared. "Ultimately, this was a better fit for my personality, and I have never looked back!"
Since joining Joseph Brant Hospital in 2006, Dr. Rawlinson has witnessed the institution's unwavering dedication to both patients and community. "JBH is a unique institution which cares as much about the community it serves as the patients who pass through its doors," he said. The exemplary practice of his colleagues has continuously inspired him to strive for impeccable standards of patient care. "I believe that working at Joseph Brant has inspired me to such an extent that this award is a direct result of me working here," Dr. Rawlinson emphasized, highlighting the profound impact the hospital environment has had on his professional development.
One of Dr. Rawlinson's most significant contributions has been establishing a consult service that bridges communication between referring physicians and radiologists. This innovative service allows physicians to directly connect with radiologists for expert opinions on optimal imaging approaches and expedited care for urgent cases.
"The consult radiologist interprets imaging results there-and-then and calls the referring physician with the result," Dr. Rawlinson explained. "This allows patients to either be fast-tracked to the ER or referred back to the care of their physician, bypassing a potentially long and unnecessary wait in the Emergency Department."
For Dr. Rawlinson, receiving the CPSO Board Award represents not just personal achievement but recognition of radiology's growing importance in medical decision-making. Though radiologists often work "one step back from the immediacy of front-line care," their impact on patient outcomes continues to expand.
His approach to medicine remains guided by a simple yet profound principle: "For patients lying before me, under my knife or portrayed by imaging, it behooves me to do the utmost to positively impact their care, directly or indirectly." He constantly asks himself how he would want his own family members treated and sets that as the standard for all patients.
As he continues his work at Joseph Brant Hospital, Dr. Rawlinson expresses enthusiasm for the future of radiology. He points to evolving imaging technologies that enable earlier diagnosis, increased accessibility to appropriate imaging, and the integration of artificial intelligence to enhance interpretative efficiency.
"As we enter the era of Artificial Intelligence, some of the more onerous tasks of interpretation will be undertaken by AI, freeing up the radiologist to focus on highlighted, salient abnormalities," he noted. "This can only be better for patients!"
Dr. Rawlinson's CPSO Board Award stands as testament to Joseph Brant Hospital's culture of excellence and the profound difference that dedicated healthcare professionals can make in the lives of patients and communities.
