National Medical Laboratory Week at Joseph Brant Hospital

April 16, 2025

National Medical Laboratory Week gives us an opportunity to recognize the critical but often unseen work of laboratory professionals who play a vital role in healthcare. These dedicated individuals provide essential diagnostic information that guides medical decisions, improves patient outcomes, and saves lives daily. In celebration of this important week, three dedicated professionals from Joseph Brant Hospital (JBH) share their insights about working in the medical laboratory field.

Diane - Medical Laboratory Technician

After selling her restaurant and embarking on a second career, Diane joined JBH eight years ago as a Medical Laboratory Technician.

"My sister works as a CVS Technician at JBH and thought I would be a good fit for the lab. I’m so grateful I took her advice and made the leap into becoming a medical lab technician, even though it was a career change!""

Diane's responsibilities include drawing blood, performing ECGs, and lab work. "My role as a Laboratory Technician helps physicians in diagnosing diseases, monitoring patient conditions and also aids in determining the effectiveness of treatments on patients."

Teamwork is central to Diane's experience at JBH. "Our ability to work together efficiently gives us the chance to aid not only each other, but to collaborate with doctors and nurses as they work to diagnose health issues and prescribe solutions to help improve patients' quality of life."

For Diane, National Medical Laboratory Week matters because "although lab work can be 'behind the scenes', it is essential for the function of any hospital, and it is integral to the health and wellbeing of our patients."

Natalia - Medical Laboratory Technologist

Approaching her sixth year at JBH, Natalia began after completing her clinical placement at the hospital. "I began my career in the histology department and then transitioned to the Core Lab. My journey at JBH has allowed me to grow professionally, and I am proud to be part of such a dedicated team."

In her role, Natalia ensures test results are processed with precision. "Every test result I work with plays a part in guiding treatment plans and improving patient outcomes, making my role both rewarding and essential to the healthcare process."

On the importance of laboratory professionals, Natalia shares, "During National Medical Laboratory Week, we shine a much-needed spotlight on the invaluable contributions made by lab professionals to patient diagnosis and care. Although frequently working behind the scenes, they play a crucial role in processing and analyzing test results that shape patient care."

Stefan - Senior Pathologists' Assistant

As Senior Pathologists' Assistant for the past two years, Stefan explains his role: "I am responsible for grossing surgical specimens. Grossing involves prepping the specimen, describing it in a written report and then submitted samples to be examined under a microscope by a Pathologist."

His work is essential for patient treatment. "The work that I do is critical to determining cancer staging and grading which in turn impacts what further treatment a patient would need."

On what makes JBH unique, Stefan notes, "The JBH laboratory is unique in how we work together to provide the best care possible while also having fun. We really communicate effectively to try and get the job done in a timely and efficient manner."

Joseph Brant Hospital extends its deepest gratitude to our laboratory team. While you may work behind the scenes, your dedication and expertise are at the heart of patient care. The precision and commitment you bring to your roles each day directly impact countless lives in our community. Thank you for being an essential part of the JBH family.
