Healthcare Security and Safety Week 2024

October 17, 2024
Celebrating Teamwork at Joseph Brant Hospital

In honour of Healthcare Security and Safety Week 2024, we are highlighting the theme, "It Takes a TEAM to Lead, Prevent and Intervene." This theme underscores the vital role of teamwork in maintaining safety and security within healthcare settings. At Joseph Brant Hospital (JBH), our security officers embody this principle through their steadfast commitment, diligence, and care.

Denver, our Security Supervisor, shares, "I chose to work in Healthcare Security to develop crucial skills in de-escalation, critical thinking, and customer service. My goal is to eventually work in law enforcement, and gaining practical experience in handling mental illness, addictions, and other health-related issues within a healthcare setting is invaluable preparation.” In her role, Denver leads Security Guards and Dispatchers, ensures policy compliance, manages code responses and incidents, oversees badging and access control, and helps develop security programs.

Jakob, our Security Team Lead, reflects on his role, saying, "I take pride in being one of the first faces patients and visitors see. Helping them with directions, returning lost items, or assisting them in reaching the Emergency Department brings me great satisfaction. It’s fulfilling to make someone’s day a bit better through these interactions." His responsibilities include protecting JBH staff, patients, visitors, and property, monitoring premises, enforcing policies, responding to incidents and emergencies, managing aggressive behavior and intervening when necessary.

Kaitlyn, one of our Dispatchers, shares her perspective on this year's theme: "This theme represents the strength of working together. Many dedicated staff members contribute to the smooth operation of the hospital. By supporting each other, we can provide exceptional care and maintain a strong presence in our community." As a Dispatcher, Kaitlyn offers exceptional customer service, coordinates incident response, monitors CCTV and alarms, and works with emergency services, all while maintaining calm and preventing panic.

As we observe Healthcare Security and Safety Week, we celebrate the invaluable contributions of our security team at Joseph Brant Hospital. Their dedication exemplifies the power of teamwork in creating a safe and supportive environment for everyone.

Joseph Brant Hospital recognizes that our hospitals and community-based services are provided on the Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and recognize this land as being home and traditional territory to other Indigenous people since time Immemorial.

We must commit to not repeat past mistakes and to work towards more equitable and respectful relationships with the First Nations, Inuit (i·nyoo·uht), and Metis (mey-tee).

Acknowledging the territories and the original stewards of these lands is a fundamental responsibility of our organization and part of our commitment to work towards Truth and Reconcillation.
