Surgical Services are offered year-round, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Services
Preparation
The type of procedure you are having will determine the steps you need to take to prepare yourself. You will receive this information from your physician or during your pre-operative planning appointment.
COVID-19 Testing for Surgery Patients
Some patients may require testing for COVID-19 before their procedure. You will be advised if you require a test.
Where to book at test
You can book a test at the Joseph Brant Hospital COVID-19 Assessment Centre or alternative testing center of your choice.
Reporting your results
If your test is positive, contact the Day Surgery Unit at 905-632-3737 ext. 4105.
Self-isolating prior to your procedure
Provincial guidelines for testing and surgical procedures, requests that you self-isolate for a period of 14 days prior to your surgical procedure.

What to bring with you to the hospital
Documents
- Ontario Health Card or proof of medical coverage.
- WSIB claim number if applicable.
- Information about private health insurance or other health benefits.
- A copy of any advance directive you may have.
- The names, addresses and telephone numbers of your family members, friends or other emergency contacts.
- The name, address and telephone number of your family physician.
- Credit card information (number and expiry date) to pay for additional hospital expenses not covered by OHIP.
- Pertinent information from your referring physician. Including, documents, X-ray reports, test results.
Medication and equipment
- All your medications in their original bottles.
- A complete list of medications you are currently taking. Including, prescription medications and non-prescription medications. As well as, vitamin or mineral supplements and herbal remedies.
- Bring your inhalers, insulin, nitro spray and eye drops to the hospital.
- If you have sleep apnea, bring your CPAP machine. Make sure it is clean and in working order.
Clothing and personal items
- Loose, comfortable clothes that are easy to put on.
- Hearing aids, dentures and eyeglasses.
- Case for glasses or contact lenses. Contact lenses must be removed.
- Socks and comfortable shoes with non-skid rubber soles, such as running shoes.
- Walker, wheelchair or other mobility aids, labelled with your name and phone number.
- Anything that will make your stay more comfortable, such as books or other diversions.
- If you are staying overnight, please bring toiletries such as a toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, deodorant, tissues or lip and skin moisturizer. Please do not bring any scented products.
What to Expect
On the day of your surgery
- Check-in at the registration desk on Level 2 of the South Tower
- Bring the documents, medications and personal effects specified by your physician or outlined in your pre-operative planning appointment.
- You will receive an armband with your name and personal health information relevant to your visit. To ensure safety and quality of care, it will be checked many times during your care.
- After you have checked-in, you will be directed to the appropriate area.

Fees
Surgical patients may incur costs not covered by OHIP. Costs may include any transport fees, supplies, or equipment. These costs are the responsibility of the patient and their family.
