It is with pride that we share that Dr. Fraser Bebbington, an Anesthesiologist at Joseph Brant Hospital, has been awarded with a Mac-CARE Excellence in Teaching Award.

This annual award honours a community preceptor who teaches at one of McMaster University’s four clinical education campuses or two medical education campuses. The Mac-CARE Excellence in Teaching Award is presented, with deepest appreciation, to the preceptor who demonstrates excellence in teaching, enthusiasm and motivation to his/her student and embodies the life-long, self-directed learning model of the McMaster medical school.

In the nominations received for Dr. Bebbington, a student shared “He is flexible and willing to put students in challenging, but safe situations in order to facilitate their procedural skill development and techniques.” Another highlighted “Dr. Bebbington embodied caring behaviours and attitudes toward other staff, nurses, and patients. This was exemplary conduct.”

He credits his parents and their commitment to putting patients first as what inspired him to pursue medicine from an early age. When deciding to specialize in anesthesiology, he thanks a preceptor he had during his training. He uses this inspiration to provide patient-centered care each and every day.

“In my role, I strive to have informed discussions with each patient before surgery,” he said. “I work to support patients during their most vulnerable time by providing them comfort and reassurance throughout their perioperative experience.”

Outside of his role as an anesthesiologist at Joseph Brant Hospital, he teaches at the McMaster University Medical School and hopes that through teaching he will help to help promote the growth and development of the next generations of physicians.

We asked him to describe his teaching style in four words.

“Patience, coaching, respectful and interactive.”

Congratulations Dr. Bebbington on your Mac-CARE Excellence in Teaching Award and thank you for providing patient-centred care each and every day.
