Joseph Brant Hospital's Laboratory provides a wide range of testing, dependent on the circumstance and needs of the patient. The tests and procedures that the Medical Laboratory staff perform provide critical information enabling doctors to diagnose, treat and monitor a patient's condition. Medical Laboratory staff includes Medical Lab Technologists (MLT), Medical Lab Assistants (MLA), Pathologist Assistants (PA), Pathologists and clerical roles.

JBH's Laboratory Services are available 24 hours, 7 days a week, with the exception of Pathology services and our Specimen Collection & ECG Lab, which are open Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 3:30 pm.

Services Provided

Joseph Brant Hospital's Laboratory Services supports inpatients, emergency room and hospital clinics in the following areas:

  • Chemistry
  • Hematology
  • Transfusion Medicine
  • Microbiology
  • Specimen Collections & Electrocardiograms (ECG)
  • Pathology & Cytology
  • Point of Care Testing

Non-registered outpatients who require specimen collections ordered from a physician's office must go to a community collection center. Please contact your family physician or a collection center, such as Dynacare or LifeLabs, for more information.

Results can be accessed digitally through ConnectMyHealth or by contacting JBH's Health Records Department.

JBH's Laboratory is committed to the development, implementation and maintenance of a Quality Management System (QMS) that will support the sustainability of high standards of professional practice while monitoring, measuring and analyzing processes for effectiveness and continuous improvement. The Laboratory is accredited by the Accreditation Canada Diagnostics standards. This provides formal recognition to an international ISO standard with particular requirements for the quality and competence of medical laboratories. The laboratory is also licensed by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

JBH supports the adaptation of people-centered care principles to create a culture of engagement and collaboration where patients and health care professionals become active partners to improve laboratory practices. Our laboratory provides opportunities for patients and users to aid in the selection of examination methods and interpretation of examination results through multi-disciplinary working groups. Some of these include:
•    Patient/Family Advisor (PFA) membership on Laboratory Committees and working groups
•    Patient satisfaction surveys and feedback tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How long will it take to receive my results?

A. Depending on the type of test(s) performed, it may take anywhere from 24 hours to 7 days to get results. Some tests may take longer.

Q. What is meant by "fasting" for my test?

A. If the test you are having requires fasting, that means that you may not have food or beverages other than water for 12 hours prior to your visit. If you are taking any medication(s), please speak to your physician for specific instructions relative to taking them or not.

Q. Can the Laboratory provide me with my results?

A. The Laboratory is not authorized to release results to patients directly. Refer to ConnectMyHealth or JBH's Health Records Department.
