If you are coming to Joseph Brant Hospital for surgery, you will be admitted to the Day Surgery Unit. Your surgery will be performed in the Operating Room. 

If you will be returning home the same day, you are an outpatient. Outpatients are discharged home from the Day Surgery Unit.

If you are staying the night, you are a Surgical Inpatient and will be admitted after surgery.

Location

The Day Surgery Unit and the Operating Room are located on Level 2 of the South Tower.

Hours of Operation

Day Surgery Unit 

  • Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. 
  • Weekends and holidays 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Operating Room

The operating room performs scheduled and emergency surgeries 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Preparation

The type of surgery or procedure you are having will determine the steps you need to take to prepare yourself. You will receive this information from your physician or during your pre-operative planning appointment.

What to expect

On the day of your surgery

  • Arrive 2 hours prior to your appointment
  • Bring the documents, medications and personal effects outlined in your pre-operative planning appointment.
  • Check-in at the registration desk on Level 2 of the South Tower
  • You will receive an armband with your name and personal health information relevant to your visit. To ensure safety and quality of care, it will be checked many times during your care.

Before your surgery

  • The Day Surgery Nurse will bring you to the Day Surgery Unit. They will review your chart, check your vital signs and complete the pre-operative checklist.
  • The Anesthetist, Surgeon and Operating Room Nurse will see you in the Day Surgery Unit before you are taken to the Operating Room.

Outpatients

  • Most outpatients are ready to go home 3 to 5 hours after surgery is complete.
  • You must have an adult with you when you go home. You cannot leave the hospital alone using public transit.
  • You cannot drive, operate machinery, make major decisions or drink alcohol for 24 hours after an anesthetic.
  • Arrange to have an adult stay with you for 24 hours after surgery.
