The Maternal and Child Program at Joseph Brant Hospital (JBH) is dedicated to providing pregnant women, infants, and children up to the age of 18 years the very best care every day. We believe in family-centred care, which means that our patients and families are partners in care.
The Maternal and Child Program is comprised of 4 units and 4 clinics, all located on the 2nd floor of the North Tower.
Maternal Child Units
Having a Baby - Labour & Delivery Unit
Our labour and delivery area is set up to care for you, your partner and family. Each room has a birthing bed, comfortable reclining chair, and birthing ball.
Maternal and Child Unit (MACU) - Mother and Baby Care - Maternity/Postpartum
A few hours after you have delivered your baby, you and your newborn will both move to the Maternal Child Unit. Your assigned room (private, semi-private or standard room) will align with your preferred accommodation request, based on availability.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit cares for babies that are premature, have low birth weight or require special care.
Paediatric Unit (PEDS)
The Paediatric Unit promotes family-centered care for newborns, children and teenagers up to 18 years of age requiring medical or surgical care.
Maternal Child Clinics
- Breastfeeding Clinic
The Breastfeeding Clinic team, provides support and care during a mother and baby’s hospital stay, as well as after discharge.
- Gestational Diabetes Clinic
The Gestational Diabetes Clinic is for women who have gestational diabetes or women who are already diabetic and become pregnant.
- Paediatric Diabetes Clinic
The Paediatric Diabetes Clinic provides outpatient care to children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes.
- Paediatric Rapid Assessment Clinic (PRAC)
The Paediatric Rapid Assessment Clinic provides timely access to care from newborn to age 18 years.
Healthcare Referrals
Making a Referral
The Pediatric Rapid Assessment Clinic (PRAC) at Joseph Brant Hospital (JBH) provides infants and children, aged 0 – 18 years timely access to clinicians who specialize in pediatric care.
Patients will be seen within 72 hours of referral, Monday to Friday from 1-4 p.m.
Referrals can be made by doctors, JBH nurses, midwives and Emergency Department (JBH or Other)
Eligibility Criteria
- Infants and children age 0-18 years
- Follow up / consultation required 72 hours (urgent/semi-urgent)
- Antenatal consult
Exclusion Criteria
- Acutely unwell infants or children
- Mental health, behaviour and developmental conditions
- Children requiring routine outpatient services for chronic conditions
- Note: we can assess or chronic issues but this clinic will not provide ongoing follow up. (eg. Will see a child with acute asthma exacerbation but not provide long term asthma management)

Note to referring Health care providers:
- All referrals must be made using the PRAC Referral Form.
- All referrals must be labelled as: urgent (<24 hours); semi-urgent (, 48 hrs) and non-urgent (up to 72 hours).
- Please attach all relevant lab testing, diagnostic imaging, and other investigations as necessary.
- Please complete the referral form fully to ensure we have all the information needed to make an appointment and arrange assessments. (correct phone number is needed)
- Incomplete or illegible referral forms will be returned without being processed.
- Please provide your patient with the PARENT/CAREGIVER INFORMATION sheet included with referral form.
- The referring Health Care Provider remains responsible for the patient until they are assessed in the clinic. Joseph Brant Hospital cannot accept responsibility until the patient is assessed.
