An Endoscopy is a procedure where a small flexible camera is used to see the inside of the body, for screening and diagnostic purposes.

The Endoscopy Unit procedures include:

  • Gastroscopy
  • Enteroscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (E.R.C.P.)
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Paracentesis/Thoracentesis

Location

The Endoscopy Unit is located on Level 2 of the South Tower.

Hours of Operation

The Endoscopy unit performs scheduled and elective procedures between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Patient Information

Prior to your procedure, the preparation education is provided by the Gastroenterologist, Respirologist or Surgeon's office providing your procedure.  Review and follow their instructions and direct all questions to the physician's office.  

On the day of your procedure

  • Take your morning medication as instructed by your doctor with small sips of water.
  • Remove all jewelry and leave at home when possible.
  • Leave your money, credit cards and valuables at home when possible.
  • Remove contact lenses.
  • If you are on your period, use a pad, not a tampon.
  • Do not wear perfumes, colognes, scented lotions or deodorant.
  • Bring your inhalers, insulin, nitro spray and eye drops to the hospital.
  • If you have sleep apnea, bring your CPAP machine. Make sure it is clean and in working order.
  • Arrive 30 minutes before your appointment.
  • Check-in at the Endoscopy/Operating Room registration desk on Level 2 of the South Tower
  • You will receive an armband with your name and personal health information relevant to your visit. To ensure safety and quality of care, it will be checked many times during your care.
  • Plan to receive sedation during your procedure and ensure you have an adult to drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours.
  • If you have sedation you cannot drive for 24 hours and will not be permitted to leave alone using public transportation.  
  • Please arrange to have an adult stay with you for 24 hours after sedation.  
  • Most patients are ready to go home one hour after their procedure is complete.
