RBC Foundation donates $550K to expand Joseph Brant Hospital’s child and adolescent mental health services

Burlington, ON (October 10, 2014) –Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce a $550,000 gift from RBC Foundation to establish the RBC Child and Adolescent Mental Health Program and enhance the Psychiatric Emergency Services Department at Joseph Brant Hospital.

“We’re incredibly grateful to RBC Foundation for their generosity and long-standing commitment to improving the health and well-being of kids and youth.” says Anissa Hilborn, President, Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation. “This gift will drive change by increasing the visibility and access to high quality Mental Health Care services for children, adolescents and their families in our community”

The donation will support two key initiatives - $400,000 will be used to establish the RBC Child and Adolescent Mental Health Program – a two-year pilot program that will expand the current, multidisciplinary program from one day a week to five  days a week, significantly reducing wait times and allowing for more children to receive the support they need, close to home.

The balance of the gift will be used to create a Psychiatric Emergency Services Department in the new Emergency Department (ED) that will be built as part of the next phase of the hospital’s Redevelopment and Expansion project, scheduled for ground breaking in the Spring of 2015. The new ED will have 1600 sq ft. of private dedicated space for Emergency Mental Health Care Services patients and will provide a safe, calm and secure space that allows patients and families in crisis to maintain privacy and dignity while receiving care.

"RBC is committed to improving the well-being of kids and youth and supporting initiatives that build capacity to address children's mental health, through the RBC Believe in Kids Pledge," said Francine Dyksterhus, RBC Regional President. "We are proud to support Joseph Brant Hospital with a donation to expand services through the RBC Child and Adolescent Mental Health Program and enhance the Psychiatric Emergency Services Department."

Currently, Joseph Brant Hospital’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Program provides services to more than 1,000 children and youth, under the age of 18, in the Burlington and Waterdown communities. This outpatient program provides mental health care services for children and adolescents with a variety of behavior, mood, anxiety, substance abuse, psychosis and developmental disorders.

“This gift will make a tremendous impact on children, youth and families in our community” says Dr. Alan Brown, Chief of Psychiatry. “Over the past year, we have witnessed a significant increase in demand for child and adolescent mental health services.  RBC’s gift will allow us to expand our capacity by 75%, reduce program wait times and mental health emergency admissions”

The prevalence of mental illness among Canadian children and youth is estimated to be between 15 and 20 per cent, and recent projections suggest this will increase by 50 per cent by the year 2020.
